Elements of Tai Chi for Balance and Health
Why Tai Chi? Current research shows that one in three seniors will take a fall each year and that 50% of those will go on to experience significant fear of falling again. This can lead to depression and a curtailing of activity, which leads to an increased likelihood of a decline in health and an increased chance of falling again. Tai Chi has been shown to improve balance, cognition, and mood. It has become one of the major components in Fall Prevention programs.
The Class: I teach elements of Tai Chi Chih and Qi Gong to senior residents, both in seated and standing positions. The class is suitable for those with disabilities. It is very safe and emphasizes body awareness and conscious movement. The music and graceful movements are conducive to stress reduction and mood enhancement.
While my main focus is seniors and fall prevention, I also teach any group interested in general health enhancement and peace of mind. Tai Chi has been called “meditation in motion”. A major focal point of the class is conscious awareness of the interplay between mind and body.
